Meet Leia Redman

Clinical Psychologist – B. Psych; M. Psych (Clinical); MAPS; CCLIN.

I work with:

  • Adults
  • Children
  • Adolescents
  • Parents
  • Families
  • NDIS

We all work with common presentations such as stress, adjustment, depression, anxiety, grief and loss. In addition I work with the following challenges:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Anger management
  • Aggression
  • Low Self-Esteem
  • Resilience Building
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder in Adults, Adolescents & Children
  • ADHD in Adults, Adolescents & Children
  • Bullying
  • Learning Difficulties
  • Family Issues
  • Bonding with Baby
  • Coping with Stress
  • Parenting
  • Child Behaviour Problems

I have training and experience in a variety of evidence based treatment approaches. These include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT); Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Interpersonal Therapy (IPT); Solution Focused Therapy; and Family Therapy. When working with clients I find  Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Positive Psychology, Parent Training and Family Therapy to be particularly beneficial.

Parent Training

With regards to Parent Training I generally use the 123 Magic Behaviour Management Program by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Thomas Phelan. I find this to be very effective for parents in managing challenging behaviour for children aged 2-12. In addition to this, it’s also helpful to address consistent parenting, establishing boundaries; establishing helpful routines within the household. I also find that establishing a parenting team (which often includes mum and dad attending a joint session where possible) is very effective. This is particularly true when tailoring these strategies to parenting teenagers. Parenting is definitely one of the most challenging jobs and equipping ourselves with effective tools throughout the journey is an must!

Family Therapy

I am also passionate about bringing the family unit together through Family Therapy. When the wheels fall off within a household it is rarely due to one person. Family Therapy provides a safe environment which encourages effective communication to flow between family members. In order for the family to move forward it is important for each member to have their say. Once this is achieved constructive goals can be set. This process often leads to positive outcomes within the household.

Individual Therapy

With individual therapy I am passionate about combining the principals of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy along with Positive Psychology. In this fast paced, technologically advanced world we live in, taking care of our brain with a proactive attitude is very important. Learning the skills of Mindfulness, Meditation, Gratitude and Positive Self-Talk are invaluable for self-care. I am also extremely passionate about teaching children Emotional Intelligence skills, which will equip them with the ability to understand and manage their emotions, as well as the importance of having empathy for others.

Therapeutic Approach

I am focused on achieving outcomes for you and will tailor your treatment according to your goals.  To achieve this, I work from a positive, solution-focused approach aimed at creating meaningful symptom relief and long-term changes that that persist after your counselling is complete. Therapy approaches that I commonly use include: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Schema Therapy (Schema Mode). For parenting struggles I use Emotion Coaching.

For trauma and PTSD I use a number of trauma-focused treatments including Prolonged exposure and Cognitive Processing Therapy (a trauma-focused CBT). I frequently use behaviour change strategies to help my clients to break bad habits and improve their health and to support their mental health.

Eating Disorders

For eating disorders I have a preference for SSCM but can also use CBT-E if indicated.  Please note, that to get the best out of an eating disorder management plan you will need to have engaged a psychiatrist at some stage.  I can make recommendations if you do not have a preference.

Am I a fit for you?

While all of this information is important, it will not tell you whether I’m a good fit for you. Fit is important as it has been found to be a core determinant of therapeutic success. A psychologist can’t help you well if they don’t ‘get’ you. So what am I about? Well, I’m committed to ensuring that you feel heard, respected and understood. Further, I believe in improving a person’s wellbeing through targeting difficulties in their mental health, physical health and relationships.
