Therapy
I have training and experience in a variety of evidence based treatment approaches. These include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT); Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Interpersonal Therapy (IPT); Solution Focused Therapy; and Family Therapy. When working with clients I find Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Positive Psychology, Parent Training and Family Therapy to be particularly beneficial.
Parent Training
With regards to Parent Training I generally use the 123 Magic Behaviour Management Program by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Thomas Phelan. I find this to be very effective for parents in managing challenging behaviour for children aged 2-12. In addition to this, it’s also helpful to address consistent parenting, establishing boundaries; establishing helpful routines within the household. I also find that establishing a parenting team (which often includes mum and dad attending a joint session where possible) is very effective. This is particularly true when tailoring these strategies to parenting teenagers. Parenting is definitely one of the most challenging jobs and equipping ourselves with effective tools throughout the journey is an must!
Family Therapy
I am also passionate about bringing the family unit together through Family Therapy. When the wheels fall off within a household it is rarely due to one person. Family Therapy provides a safe environment which encourages effective communication to flow between family members. In order for the family to move forward it is important for each member to have their say. Once this is achieved constructive goals can be set. This process often leads to positive outcomes within the household.
Individual Therapy
With individual therapy I am passionate about combining the principals of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy along with Positive Psychology. In this fast paced, technologically advanced world we live in, taking care of our brain with a proactive attitude is very important. Learning the skills of Mindfulness, Meditation, Gratitude and Positive Self-Talk are invaluable for self-care. I am also extremely passionate about teaching children Emotional Intelligence skills, which will equip them with the ability to understand and manage their emotions, as well as the importance of having empathy for others.
